2 Discipline of Chemistry, School of Environmental and Life Sciences, The University of Newcastle, Callaghan, NSW 2308, Australia Abstract: The reaction of a waste refrigerant mixture of CFC-12, HCFC-22 and HFC-134a (in an argon/methane bath gas) in a dielectric barrier discharge non-thermal plasma reactor has been studied. The conversion of the major refrigerant, CFC-12, ranged from 59–76 % for an input energy density range of 3–13 kJ/L. The reaction results in the formation of a range of gaseous products as well as non-crosslinked polymers of two distinct fractions.

Solubility, Viscosity and Density of Refrigerant/Lubricant Mixtures

Solubility (vapor pressure) , viscosity and density have been experimentally determined for thirty-five potential refrigeration working fluids. Properties for low refrigerant concentration mixtures (0, 10, 20 and 30 weight percent refrigerant) were determined over the temperature range 0 to IOO•C (32 to 212"F) or to the critical temperature of the refrigerant, and pressure range 0 to 3,500 kPa ...

Theoretical Analysis of Hydrocarbon Refrigerant Mixtures as a Replacement for HCFC -22 for Residential Uses

This paper investigates the feasibility of hydrocarbon refrigerant mixtures as a replacement for HCFC-22 in residential air-conditioning and heat pump systems. The COP and the seasonal performance factor (SPF) were calculated using a UA-model for single component refrigerants and refrigerant mixtures. Simulations were run for pure propane and the mixtures of propane/i-pentane, propane/n-butane,...

Attenuation of fluorocarbons released from foam insulation in landfills.

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) have been used as blowing agents (BAs) for foam insulation in home appliances and building materials, which after the end of their useful life are disposed of in landfills. The objective of this project was to evaluate the potential for degradation of BAs in landfills, and to develop a landfill model, wh...

Heat transfer and fluid flow in spray evaporators with application to reducing refrigerant inventory

As the phase-out of chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's) approaches, there is a current need for the development of new vapor compression chillers which can operate with non-CFC refrigerants while still maintaining high operating efficiencies. Redesign of the traditional flooded evaporator used in refrigeration chillers so as to incorporate a spray evaporation capability offers both a potential for incr...

Reductive dechlorination of chlorofluorocarbons and hydrochlorofluorocarbons in sewage sludge and aquifer sediment microcosms.

The reductive transformation of the 10 most-widely distributed fluorinated volatile compounds and of tetrachloroethene was investigated for up to 177 days under anaerobic conditions in sewage sludge and aquifer sediment slurries. Concentrations of parent compounds and of degradation products were identified by GC-MS. We observed transformation of CFC-11 to HCFC-21 and HCFC-31, of CFC-113 to HCF...
